Sugar-free is not outcome-free
Replacing a full-sugar soft drink with a sugar-free one removes a large dose of free sugar and kilojoules. For some people, particularly those managing blood glucose, that immediate difference can be useful. Pretending the two drinks are nutritionally identical helps nobody.
It is also not the whole story. The World Health Organization advises that non-sugar sweeteners should not be relied upon to control weight or reduce long-term disease risk. The recommendation is conditional because much of the longer-term evidence is observational, but the core message is sensible: sweetness without sugar is not the same as building a healthier diet.
Safety and usefulness are different questions
Approved sweeteners have safety limits and are assessed for use in food. The WHO guideline was not a declaration that a can of diet drink is toxic. It asked whether using non-sugar sweeteners delivers lasting weight-control or disease-prevention benefits, and found no clear long-term win.
Polyols such as sorbitol, mannitol and xylitol sit in a different category and were not covered by that recommendation. They can also trigger gastrointestinal symptoms for some people because several are FODMAPs. A 'no added sugar' protein bar can still be a fairly efficient way to ruin an IBS afternoon.
A useful bridge does not have to become your permanent address.
Turn the sweetness down, not sideways
If a sugar-free swap helps you move away from several sugary drinks a day, use it deliberately. Then reduce frequency, try sparkling water, drink unsweetened tea or coffee, and let fruit do more of the sweet work in meals.
Taste adjusts. Plain yoghurt stops tasting aggressively sour. Coffee stops needing syrup. Berries begin to feel properly sweet again. The aim is not a joyless life without dessert. It is to stop every breakfast, snack and drink screaming the same high note.
